Whether buying in-game currency makes sense depends on how you value your time. A simple calculation helps.
Step 1: how much do you need?
Decide what the currency is for — gear, crafting, market investing — and get a realistic amount, not a dream figure.
Step 2: how long would it take to farm?
Estimate how much you earn per hour of play. Divide the amount you need by that rate and you have the hours required.
Step 3: what is an hour worth?
Think about your own free time. If you only have a few hours per week, spending most of them farming may not be how you want to play.
Step 4: compare
Multiply the hours by the value you place on an hour, and compare with the price on our price index. If buying is clearly cheaper than your time, it may be worth it. If you enjoy the farming itself, it may not be.
The risks to weigh
- Publisher rules. Selling and buying currency may be against the rules. Account penalties are possible. This risk is real and never zero.
- Seller risk. Use sellers with public policies and delivery proof. Read our account security checklist first.
- Price movement. Prices change; a quote locks the price you see.
